[NANAMI HARUTA QUARTET ]

Nanami Haruta - Trombone

Trombonist Nanami Haruta made the move from her native Sapporo to Tokyo as a teenager, and quickly established herself as a dynamic & inspired player. Master trombonist Michael Dease heard her at a festival when she was 17, and later convinced her to make another move, to pursue her degree with him and Rodney Whitaker at Michigan State University. With professional affiliations now including Whitaker's Sextet & drummer Ulysses Owens Jr's Big Band. Her latest release, The Vibe documents the respect she's garnered from her mentors and showcases her significant musical voice. With her quartet - including Whitaker, Owens, and Xavier Davis on piano - along with guest appearances by producer Dease and guitarist Chris Minami, Haruta unveils an assertive posture and a compelling, robust tone on this set of five originals, two pieces by co-producer/executive producer Gregg Hill, and four covers, including Curtis Fuller's "Algonquin."

Chris Minami - Guitar

Christopher Minami is one of the finest archtop guitarists of the current generation. Minami has won national competitions, grants, tours and has shared the stage with greats such as Rodney Whitaker, Michael Dease, Geoffrey Keezer, Bobby Floyd, and Camille Thurman. A native of Florida, Minami completed his undergraduate degree in both classical and jazz guitar at Florida State University’s College of Music in the studio of Bruce Holzman. While at FSU, Minami was a member of the Jazz Honors Band under the direction of Marcus Roberts. Minami recently completed his master's in jazz studies at the Michigan State University College of Music in the studio of Randy Napoleon. Minami is featured on Napoleon’s latest record “Waking Dream” set to be released on August 22nd on Origin Records. “Chris Minami is another exceptional player and person. While he can certainly burn, the element that stands out to me about his playing is his lyricism.” - Randy Napoleon 

Minami maintains a private guitar studio and has taught at prestigious institutions such as the Interlochen Center for the Arts, Brevard Music Center, and Michigan State University.

Jon Muir-Cotton - Bass

a multi-award winning young, up and coming double bassist and bassist trained in both the jazz and classical traditions; playing many genres including jazz, funk, gospel, blues, R&B and neo-soul. Under the mentorship and tutelage of great Detroit bassists like Marion Hayden, Robert Hurst, Rick Robinson, Rodney Whitaker, and Ralphe Armstrong, Jonathon is working towards making his own mark in the music world. Jonathon has continued to  garner great opportunities to perform internationally, with consistent rotations in Detroit, New York, Ann Arbor, and many other venues across the state of Michigan and around the country.  Jonathon is a student at Michigan State University pursuing his Bachelors in Jazz Studies.

Muir-Cotton has performed with various renowned artists both locally and nationally, including Karriem Riggins, Kris Johnson, Dwight Adams, Curtis Taylor, Christian Sands, Joe Farnsworth, Vincent Chandler, Ali Jackson, Esperanza Spalding, Ian Finkelstein, Soul Science Lab, and Kamau Kenyatta. He has his own talented and versatile extended band Expressions, and is an often sought out bassist for other artists, their bands, and for studio work.  Jonathon continues to hone his craft, hopes to tour the world, and eventually become a music educator, teaching jazz at the collegiate level as well as be an inspiration and give back to the next generation of students and aspiring musicians.

1985 Joined organ player Dr. Lonnie Smith’s group.
1986 Started longtime association with Lou Donaldson.
Concert appearance in the US, Japan and Europe.
1987 Gigs at New York jazz clubs and frequent Japan tours with Shizuko Yokoyama.
1992 Attended the recording of album Birdseeds by Lou Donaldson.
1994 Played at Japan’s most prestigious jazz festival, Mt. Fuji Jazz Festival.
1995 Featured on Lou Donaldson’s album, Sentimental Journey.
Also appeared at Montreal Jazz Festival with Lou Donaldson.
2001 Recording of Shizuko Yokoyama’s album, To My Mother.
2002 Norwegian Sun Jazz Cruise with bass player Rufus Reid and the all-star saxophone super group of Lou Donaldson, Jimmy Heath, James Moody, David “Fathead” Newman.
2003 Appearances with Frank Wess, Randy Johnston, and the Lou Donaldson Trio.
2004 Attended the recording of Too Damn Hot by Dr. Lonnie Smith Trio.

Rahul Shah - Saxophone

Rahul Shah is an award-winning saxophonist based in New York City. Having recently graduated from the Manhattan School of Music, he is currently a resident saxophone, flute, and clarinet instructor at several private schools around the city. Alongside his current position, Rahul maintains a full performing and private teaching schedule with notable performances at venues across the city such as Smalls, Birdland, Dizzy’s Coca-Cola Club, The Django, and Winnie’s Jazz Bar. Most recently, Rahul made his international debut having received first place at the 2024 Carinthia International Jazz Saxophone Competition. Additionally, Rahul was awarded second place at the 2025 Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium Jazz Competition. Rahul has had the privilege to play in several professional ensembles including the Mingus Big Band and the Jason Marshall Big Band, as well as alongside prominent musicians Jeb Patton, Pasquale Grasso, Jaleel Shaw, Marcus Printup, and Wycliffe Gordon.

Steven Feifke - Piano

Steven Feifke is a GRAMMY Award winning bandleader, composer, and arranger.Steven Feifke is a GRAMMY Award-winning bandleader, composer and arranger. Heralded as a “masterful pianist” (JAZZIZ), Feifke has been featured on prominent news and television outlets including NBC, FOX, and CBS. His impressive resume includes collaborations with jazz icons such as Wynton Marsalis and Christian McBride, as well as renowned ensembles like the Metropole Orkest, NY Pops and the Toronto Symphony. Feifke’s music has received praise for its “infectious joy” (DownBeat Magazine) and has toured extensively throughout the world including Thailand, Italy, Canada, Colombia and Ecuador. His new trio album The Role of the Rhythm Section Vol. II captures the more intimate side of his artistry in a fresh take on the classic piano trio. As a Yamaha Performing Artist, an Avid Sibelius Artist, Feifke has appeared on over 45 albums to date. He has also written music for hit TV shows like The Masked Singer, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, Impractical Jokers, Animaniacs, and several award-winning short films. Feifke is a sought after educator, and has previously held a professorship of Harmony and Jazz Composition at Berklee College Of Music. He has also been invited to give guest lectures and Artist in Residencies at institutions including Juilliard, Yale University, Jazz At Lincoln Center, New York University, UT Austin, Northern Illinois University, and more. With a digital presence spanning an audience of over 85,000, Feifke’s online education platform for big band and orchestral composition and arranging, Lead Sheet to Large Ensemble, is one of the largest of its kind worldwide. In his free time, he enjoys jogging, reading, and playing chess.

Gavin Gray - Bass

Gavin Gray began his musical journey studying classical bass with Susan Powell, earning the assistant principal chair in the All Nationals Symphony Orchestra. He pivoted his focus to jazz performance during high school upon winning the Outstanding Bassist award at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Essentially Ellington competition and being introduced to an inspiring nationwide network of young jazz musicians. He proceeded to be named a National Youngarts Winner in jazz and earn admittance to the Eastman School of Music where he studied with Jeff Campbell.

During his undergraduate studies, Gavin was selected as a member of the Jazz at Aspen Snowmass big band directed by Christian McBride and named an Outstanding Soloist award winner in Downbeat Magazine's student music awards. After graduating in 2023, Gavin relocated to New York City to pursue a graduate degree and serve as a graduate adjunct instructor at New York University.

He has performed residencies at the Guimares Jazz Festival in Portugal with the Tommaso Perazzo quintet and Caroga Lake Music Festival with Laufey, Eddie Barbash and Kyle Athayde; gone on tour with the Emma Hedrick Quintet culminating in a mainstage concert at the Elkhart jazz Festival and a sold out Indianapolis Jazz Kitchen performance; performed with Rich Thompson's Trio Generations at the 2023 Rochester Jazz Festival; and made regular appearances at Winnies Jazz Bar in New York City with saxophonist Rahul Shah. He is currently based in New York City, where he maintains a regular performance schedule with a variety of artists and is preparing for the release of his recently-recorded debut album.

Sam Bolduc - Drums

Samuel was born and raised in a musical family (his dad was a guitar player) which led him to the drums at age 7. Until the age of 19, Samuel was very active and in demand in various projects including recording studios all over Montreal. In 2017, he pursued his studies in Boston at Berklee college of music where he studied with the great Ralph Peterson Jr. Sam. Got to perform in various places with Ralph such as: Bern Jazz festival, DC jazz festival, Dizzies and Scullers. Samuel got involved in many different projects at Wally's Jazz Café where he would perform on a daily basis with people like Jason Palmer, Kevin Harris and tenor Noah Preminger. After graduating from Berklee College of music, he then pursues his musical career in New-York city where he gets to perform with the likes of Curtis Lundy, Stacy Dillard, Victor Gould, Richie Goods, Pat Bianchi, Eric Wheeler, Craig Handy, Steve Wilson, Lonnie Plaxico, Dezron Douglas, Paul Bollenback, Harvie

S., Josh Evans, Jacques Schwarz-Bart, Anthony Wonsey, Sheryl bailey and many others. In the summer of 2023 Samuel was selected amongst thousands of candidates to attend the famous Jazz in Aspen music program where he got to learn from the legendary bassist Christian McBride.

Samuel has played in countries such as Canada, USA, France, Germany, Switzerland, Russia and the Netherlands.
